Large-eruption rates of stratovolcanoes

چکیده
The large-eruption rates of stratovolcanoes are modelled exchangeably, in order to derive an informative prior distribution as an input into a subsequent volcano-by-volcano hazard assessment. Derivation and implementation of the likelihood function is not straightforward, necessitating a detailed code verification. Analysis of the LaMEVE database suggests that most of the world’s stratovolcanoes are currently capable of producing large eruptions, but that the current largeeruption rate of active volcanoes with no recent record of eruptions is low, about 1.2 /kyr. The model is checked via a visual ‘Turing test’, and the paper concludes with some reflections on code verification and computation methods.

How will melting of ice affect volcanic hazards in the twenty-first century?
Glaciers and ice sheets on many active volcanoes are rapidly receding. There is compelling evidence that melting of ice during the last deglaciation triggered a dramatic acceleration in volcanic activity. Will melting of ice this century, which is associated with climate change, similarly affect volcanic activity and associated hazards? This paper provides a critical overview of the evidence th...
متن کاملMagma chamber behavior beneath a volcanic edifice
[1] The construction of a large volcanic edifice at Earth’s surface generates stresses in the upper crust whose magnitude is comparable to those of tectonic stresses and overpressures within a magma chamber. We study how this affects eruption behavior. Analytical calculations are carried out in two dimensions for a cylindrical reservoir with an internal overpressure in an elastic half-space wit...
متن کاملSilicate Cooling Model Fits to Galileo NIMS Data of Volcanism on Io
The Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) has obtained spectra of volcanoes on the surface of the jovian satellite Io. Fits to data using a silicate cooling model allow us to constrain lava eruption rates and eruption age. The thermal signatures of the hot spots are indicative of active and cooling silicate lava flows. For large, active hot spots maximum ages of flow surfaces detected by NI...
متن کاملStorage conditions and eruptive dynamics of central versus flank eruptions in volcanic islands: the case of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain)
We report the results of phase equilibrium experiments on a phonolite produced during one of the most voluminous flank eruptions (ca. 1 km 3) of the Teide-Pico Viejo complex (Tenerife Island). Combined with previous experimental and volcanological data we address the factors that control the structure of the phonolitic plumbing system of Teide-Pico Viejo stratovolcanoes. The Roques Blancos phon...
متن کاملAn improved age framework for late Quaternary silicic eruptions in northern Central America
Five new stepwise-heating Ar/Ar ages and one new high-sensitivity C date of ash-fall and ash-flow deposits from late Quaternary silicic volcanoes in northern Central America document the eruption rates and frequencies of five major rhyodacite and rhyolite calderas (Atitlán, Amatitlán, Ayarza, Coatepeque, and Ilopango) located north of the basalt, andesite, and dacite stratovolcanoes of the Cent...
